One of the early features that Microsoft used to push Windows Vista for notebook users was the SideShow display capability that could display things like email on a small secondary screen without having to actually open the notebook. That feature failed to be the big draw that Microsoft hoped for so for the most part dual screen notebooks didn’t materialize.

Lenovo has taken the dual screen notebook to a new level with the introduction of its massive ThinkPad W700ds. The laptop weights a portly 11 pounds and has two LCDs, not for SideShow but for extending the desktop of the notebook for more screen real estate.

The primary display is 17-inches and the secondary display is a 10.6-inch unit. That is like grafting a netbook on the side of the notebook. The machine has other drawbacks besides the weight. Its selling price starts at $2,500 and the battery life on a notebook with dual screens has to be bad compared to other notebooks.
