Blockbuster and Sonic Solutions have worked together to bring streaming movie rentals to the Internet from Blockbusters movie catalog. The agreement between the two firms will have Blockbuster providing the branded consumer interfaces and Sonic will power the content delivery across the Internet and other electronic devices.
That means we will see boxes like the Roku Netflix player being offered. Once Netflix offered its streaming titles via set top boxes, it was only a matter of time until Blockbuster did the same. The services will be offered on the PC, PMPs, Blu-ray players and PVRs as well as mobile phones.
The Blockbuster branded service will be powered by Sonic's CinemaNow SDK and will be available on both windows and Mac computers. I say this every time a firm launches a streaming movie rental or download service; if it offers first run titles the day you can get them in the movie store it will be successful. I doubt that will happen, but we can hope.
