Heartland Payment Systems is a major payment processor for various credit card companies. The company revealed yesterday that it had been the victim of a major security breach in 2008. Heartland says that it discovered malicious code in its software processing system last week.
Heartland's CFO said that the company immediately notified the authorities when it discovered the breach. According to the company no customer social security numbers, PIN numbers, or other personally identifiable information was breached.
None of Heartlands check, payroll, or micropayment operations were reportedly breached. If any information was compromised, Heartland doesn't mention it. It would be odd for someone to insert malicious code that did nothing, so I have to wonder what actually happened.
