The first day of CES 2009 earlier this month AMD announced officially its new Phenom II CPU along with its Dragon platform. The CPU on its own offered up some impressive performance in my review, especially given the low cost of the fastest Phenom II part.
Anytime new video cards or CPUs are launched, there is a small cadre of enthusiasts that aren’t happy with the stock levels of performance and go to extreme measures to get more performance from the hardware.
Such is the case with the new Phenom II CPU. A group of overclockers has used liquid nitrogen and liquid helium to cool the processor to around -232 degrees Celsius. Once the CPU was frosty, the team proceeded to overclock it to 6.5GHz. At that number, the CPU helped the computer lay down a 3DMark05 score of 45,474.
