The T-Mobile G1 was the first Google Android device to come to market. Like most first to market products, it had its share of glitches and issues. T-Mobile has promised to fix the issues via firmware updates, and has so far kept that promise.

T-Mobile has released a new firmware update this month that adds a new and appealing feature to the G1 that users will like. The notable feature added by the new update is Voice Search. An Android software engineer explained the new feature saying that users would push a button and then hear a prompt that says, "Speak now" and they can then dictate their search query.

As with many voice controlled devices and software, the chances of the G1 not understanding what you said can be quite high depending on the environment and background noise. The application provides alternate queries by hitting the down arrow in hopes that one of them will be useful.

G1 users will also be able to use the voice recognition update to voice dial numbers on their phones and search contact lists using voice commands. The firmware update also adds the ability for users to save attachments sent via MMS.

Google has offered voice search technology for the iPhone previously, which was a strange move considering at the time its own Android devices lacked voice search. The release of voice search for the iPhone before Android was seen as a nod by the search giant to the fact that the iPhone was still the dominant platform on the market.

Other fixes from the new firmware update included a fix for a bug that ended an IM session when the user turned on Wi-Fi and one that caused calendar reminders to not be sent. T-Mobile announced the update on February 2nd and expected the rollout of the fix to be offered to all customers within the following two weeks.
