Two companies, Advasense and Creative Sensor Inc., have teamed up to develop and deliver what they claim to be the world's smallest 5MP autofocus camera sensor aimed at the camera phone market. The sensor is called the Advasense ASIO5 5MP camera sensor.
The sensor uses a 1/4 inch optical format CMOS sensor and measures just 8.3mm x 8.3mm with its autofocus CCM included. The tiny sensor should make it into camera phones and enable even the thin designs common today to have a higher resolution sensor inside.
I wonder what sort of quality images taken using the sensor will have. The biggest problem with camera phones today isn't megapixels. The big problem is that few camera phone sensors are capable of taking a decent looking image in low light conditions. What we need is a camera sensor with better optics not necessarily more megapixels.
