Microsoft said recently that the way to upgrade an Windows XP system is to first upgrade it to Vista SP1 and then install Windows 7. Personally I will not even try to do it. I just will, if I actually decide to stick with Windows and not switch to Apple, buy new hardware and install Windows 7 clean. But what are all the businesses going to do with their existing huge Windows XP install base?
CRN looked into the proposed upgrade path and did not find gold at the end of the rainbow.
They tried several Windows 7 installs and ran into problems. Windows 7 is still in beta and possibly Microsoft is going to improve on some of the potential issues.
I would rather see though Microsoft giving some thought into a direct upgrade path for Windows XP to Windows 7. Offering this would give them a tremendous plus point with businesses they badly need with the damage they did with Vista.
