Vudu says that it is now the first on-demand service to offer HD movies for download to own on its 1080p Internet movie Player. The HD movies are available to purchase right now according to Vudu. The company says that until now users could only rent HD movies from on-demand services and that it is the first to offer the ability to buy the movies.
The company offers a library of over 1,400 HD movies, which it claims to be the largest HD library in the world. This week the company unveiled 50 new HD movies from top independent movie studios for rental and to own. The movies are available in both HD and Vudu's HDX format at the same price.
HDX claims to be the highest quality on-demand format around. Among the independent movie studios offering films for sale on Vudu are FirstLook Studios, Kino, and magnolia Pictures. Titles purchased on Vudu can be stored on the user's Vudu box or in a free online storage area called the Vudu Vault. Movies to own on Vudu cost between $13.99 and $23.99 in HD format.
