GM owned German Auto maker Opel is set to unveil the Opel Ampera, their first electric car at the Geneva Motor Show 2009 on March 5th.
The Opel Ampera electric car promises 500km (~300 miles) reach. For trips up to 60 km, the five-door, four-seat hatchback runs on electricity stored in the 16 kWh, lithium-ion battery, and emits zero CO2. When the battery’s energy is depleted, electricity from an on-board engine-generator extends the Ampera’s range to more than 500 km
The Ampera looks cooler than the Chevy Volt, but then again the Volt looked also amazing as a concept and was then toned down quite a bit. Who knows what the Opel Ampera will look when it actually goes on sale, which is not revealed yet.
The future of Opel is at the same time also uncertain. GM as you know is in deep trouble and Opel is tied to the GM financial turmoil. Currently German government is discussing ways to save Opel in Germany.

The 79th International Motor Show 2009 takes place in Geneva, Switzerland from the 5th of March until 15th of March. Of course "green" cars are again the main topic, but car makers also still offer the fancy expensive cars like the new Aston Martin DBS Volante.
