Samsung has announced that it is now using 40nm technology in the construction of a new 8Gb Flex-OneNAND fusion memory chip. The chip is a Samsung proprietary technology that uses both SLC and MLC in a single chip designed for high speed and high reliability.

The Flex-OneNAND chip will be used in different device types including HDTVs, IPTVs and other high-end applications by the end of the year. Samsung says that the 40nm technology allows it to increase productivity by up to 180% over the first generation modules using 60nm technology.

The new Flex-OneNAND 8Gb chip's MLC area provides up to three times greater read speed and its SLC area has four times greater read speed than normal MLC NAND. Phones using the NAND chips in their embedded memory are expected to come with 1GB to 32GB of embedded memory using the new technology.
