VIA announced its latest media system processor called the VX855 that is described as a highly integrated all-in-one chipset that meets the needs of today's SFF and mobile PC systems. The processor offers full hardware acceleration of the most popular video standards including H.264, MPEG-2/4, DivX, and WMV9 allowing smooth playback at 1080p resolution.
The processor operates inside a 2.3W thermal design power envelope and is intended to let netbooks and other small systems play full HD video. VIA says that the processor supports all operating systems including Windows 7.
All of the features of a Northbridge and Southbridge are integrated into the single VX855 measuring 27mm x 27mm, over 46% smaller than competing solutions according to VIA. Also featured is advanced HD audio with a 192kHz sampling rate and the ability to support up to two low power DDR2 memory modules.
