Apple announced yesterday that iTunes customers could buy and rent box office hits like Quantum of Solace and Twilight in HD on the iTunes store. Apple said that customers can buy films for download in HD for $19.99 direct from iTunes and that all movies will be available for rental in HD for $4.99 within 30 days of their release.
The films can be watched on Mac computers, PCs, iPods and Apple TV. The $20 price for an HD movie isn’t bad, many new Blu-ray films sell for $10 more than that price, and you have to go to the store to buy them.
I still say that rentals on iTunes won’t take off until you can get the films the day they are released in stores for rental. Having to wait 30 days before new releases hit iTunes will mean that most people who want to see a new film has already rented the movie in their local store.
