Belkin is urging computer users to switch off their lights and surge protectors on Saturday March 28 as part of the Earth Hour initiative. By turning off surge protectors standby power can be eliminated. Standby power is the power lost to devices that are not in use, but still drawing power.
According to the US Department of Energy, about 20% of the average homes power usage is phantom power. To help reduce the amount of phantom power loss in your home Belkin has a surge protector that has a wireless remote for turning off outlets.
The device has six outlets that can be turned off with the remote and two outlets that are on all the time. The surge protector is called the Belkin Conserve Energy-Saving 8-Outlet Surge Protector and it retails for $49.99.
