Laptop Magazine spent some hands on time with T-Mobile's just released and very first USB laptop modem. The modem is called the webConnect USB Laptop Stick and sells for $49.99 with a 2-year contract.
The data plan is $59.99 per month with a cap of a pathetic 5GB per month. I still can't believe that consumers pay for a service with such a low bandwidth cap per month, you can seriously blow 5GB in a day simply updating your drivers.
The modem is the first 3G offering from T-Mobile and as such, it suffers from a paltry 3G network compared to the other major providers. The good part about the modem is that it includes a bandwidth manager built into the connection manager software. Laptop says it uploaded at 242Kbps and downloaded at 536Kbps with 3-4 bars of strength in the office, making performance mediocre.
