Toshiba is demonstrating its new self-encrypting drive technology at the RAS conference in San Francisco. The new technology supports the TCG Storage Architecture Core Specification and the SSC Opal Specification.

The technology encrypts all data on a hard drive with NIST-certified AES encryption technology that is integrated into the HDD controller chip. By integrating the encryption, technology into the controller chip the encryption/decryption process happens at full I/O speeds according to Toshiba.

The encryption technology promises to not impact drive performance and to require the same power as a drive without encryption technology. The technology also supports other certified algorithms for authentication and access control. Drives using the new technology are expected to debut in Q1 2010.
