I am a big home theater fan and really like a good surround sound system. Audyssey has announced a new DSX system that adds more speakers to go beyond 5.1 surround sound in a home theater. The maker says that the DSX system adds new speaker channels to overcome the spatial sound rendering limits faced by 5.1 systems.
Audyssey says that for an immersive sound experience humans need more than what 5.1 systems can deliver and the DSX system creates additional channels to augment 5.1 surround sound with the correct direction, time of arrival, and frequency response for an expanded sound stage.
The solution is scalable and adds a pair of wide channels and a pair of height channels to render additional sound detail. DSX also features a technology called surround envelopment processing to improve the blend between front and surround channels. Current 7.1 systems can be adapted to DSX by simply moving the back surround speakers to wide locations.
