I've got some good news for those of you who love Apple, but hate AT&T. The Apple iPhone 3G version 2.2.1 has been unlocked by iPhone Unlocking Solutions. This is big news for all of the gadget geeks out there, because version 2.2.1 has long been considered impossible to unlock.
Of course, calling something impossible is just another way of making it irresistible to tech geeks. From the very day the iPhone was released, users have spent hundreds of hours of effort figuring out how to unlock it. For a very long time the only way was to open up the phone itself and fiddle around inside. This was a very risky procedure that was more likely to ruin your phone than unlock it if you didn't know exactly what you were doing.
Then iPhone Unlocking Solutions came around. They weren't the first company to offer people one-click unlocking solutions that didn't involve complicated electronic surgery, but they were the first company to make it affordable. Unlocking your iPhone costs just $29.95 at Unlock-the-iPhone.com, and it works on every version of the iPhone out there.
I don't know how Apple feels about these guys providing ways for people to get around their contract with AT&T, but I think it is fantastic. The iPhone is a wonderful smartphone, and there's no good reason people should be forced to switch carriers and break contracts just to use one. As far as I'm concerned, the guys from iPhone Unlocking Solutions are providing a useful service, both for Apple and its fans.
