The Intel Atom processor isn’t exactly considered a performance part. The power sipping processors are known for powering netbooks and nettops with an eye towards energy efficiency. Despite the fact that the Atom offers little raw performance, Supermicro has announced a new server series that uses Atom parts.

The servers are extreme low power machines needing only 4W and 8W of power to operate and are designed for embedded industrial applications. The low power servers are ideal for storage and network appliances like print or email servers.

Both servers are optimized for the Atom 230 single-core processor consuming 4W of power and support up to four SATA ports, RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10, offer seven USB headers, 2GB of RAM, and more. The 8W server uses the dual-core Atom 330 CPU. The servers weight ten pounds, have a depth of 9.8-inches, and can use half height expansion cards.
