With the Wii's massive success, it was only going to be a matter of time before Microsoft and Sony got in bed with motion-capturing technology as well. Last week we reported on some leaked photos up on Engadget that showed the Xbox hooked up to a motion sensor. Now we finally have confirmation of both the sensor's capabilities, and its origins.

3DV, an Israeli company working on a cheap, next-gen motion capture technology, looks like it will be bringing its ZCam technology to the 360. There have been rumors for a while that Microsoft intended to purchase 3DV, and now ars technica is reporting that they have actually seen the ZCam in action.

They saw it last year at E3, and from the reports it sounds like some really incredible technology. Gamers will need only their body, no peripherals required, to play. The sensor bar is sensitive enough to pick up your body's every movement, and smart enough to screen out everything that isn't you.

Outside of the immeasurable gaming possibilities (ars mentions a boxing game that sounds fantastic) you can also control the basic functions of the gaming system itself. You can browse through your list of movies or music, channel surf, or change the volume all with a wave of your hand. And, unless Microsoft jacks the price up, 3DV expects its device to cost under $100 when all is said and done.
