Mitsubishi Fuso announces that it wants to develop a pedestrian collision detection system for its Trucks.

The pedestrian warning system will be based on their parent company (DaimlerChrysler) research project.
The system uses a pair of cameras mounted on the truck to take images of objects and provide information on distance. A control unit compares the images with a database of about 10,000 human shapes to identify pedestrians. This identification process works at truck speeds up to 30kph and for pedestrians at distances in the range of 5-20 meters. Mitsubishi says it will take several years until the system can be brought to the market.
More details on Nikkei.Net (subscription). DaimlerChrysler has a page on their automatic driver warning research. Some more background on Pedestrian Detection can be found on this page.
