Mac sales haven't exactly been stunning in light of the incredible sales numbers the iPhone and iPod Touch have seen. The future of Apple obviously rests more with the iPhone and iPod line than it does with Macs. But, that doesn't mean that the MacBook is dead. In fact, thanks to Intel it's about to get a quad core processor.

Intel just went over its notebook plans for the near future, and the Calpella notebook platform featured heavily in them. The Calpella will be designed for 13, 15.6, 17.1, and 18.4-inch high-end notebook products. The Calpella will come in 1.6 and 1.73 GHz Core 1 Quad chips ($364 and $546, respectively), as well as a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Extreme XE chip ($1054).

AppleInsider thinks that the 1.6 and 1.73 GHz chips will be the ones that make it into the Apple notebook line. This makes sense, as the Calpella platform is the sequel to the Montevina platform, which is found in all of the current MacBooks. If you're already shaking in your britches at the thought of quad-core Apples, then I've got more good news for you.

The entrance of Calpella means that Montevina is no longer Intel's primary line. They'll be cutting the costs of the Montevina chips to get rid of them, which means a nice drop in price for all of the MacBooks currently out on the market. All in all, right now is a pretty darn good time to be an Apple fan.
