E3 News Coverage

We've heard many rumors about the new Xbox 360 motion sensor. A lot of people in the industry think that we'll finally see it unveiled at E3. A Wall Street Journal article published today says that the new Xbox sensor will probably be revealed during the E3 2009 expo, but that release will probably wait until 2010.

To tide you over, we've got a little new information about the 360's upcoming motion sensing technology. Apparently it will use a 3D webcam in order to track player body movement, which means that the players themselves don't have to hold any clunky controllers or wear any silly motion tracking gear.

Most of those details have been known for a while now. What is new is that we have our first picture of what the actual device will look like. Apparently the earlier pictures (which showed a long, thin white sensor box sitting under the television) were just prototypes. The new device looks for all the world like a big webcam. 3DV, the creators of the camera, call it a ZCam. See also an early image of the ZCam from 2007, when first reported about the ZCam from 3DVO. It's supposed to be low cost (look to pay around a hundred dollars for it), and capable of tracking both big movements and tiny gestures.

We'll give you Xbox fans more details as they come to light. Most sources I've found are putting the release date at some point in 2010, which is one hell of a wait. I'm hopeful that Microsoft will have it ready to release around Christmas (if they do, it'll be the must-have geek toy of the season).
