LG showed off a new full HD LCD panel that is only 5.9mm thick. In January CES was all about thin HDTVs. At the CES 2009 Samsung actually showed a 6.5mm thin LED LCD TV display. Now LG beats that with a 5.9mm thick, 47 inch FHD LED LCD HDTV Panel.
The new LG displays support full HD resolution, 8ms response time and 120Hz technology.
The trend to make thinner HDTVs has basically just started. The next years will drive down the depth of TV sets even further. LCD has its limits, but then OLED can take over and enable HDTVs to become thinner than 1mm. Impossible? See for instance the 0.05mm thin Samsung OLED display prototype.
