Anyone who follows technology and computers knows that the Intel Atom processor is at the heart of virtually all of the netbooks and nettop computers on the market. The little processor consumes small amounts of power and offers up the performance most people need. The processor is also finding uses in other technology items that need processing power with low power consumption.

QNAP has announced a new network attached storage device called the SS-439 Pro Turbo NAS that uses an Intel Atom N270 processor running at 1.6GHz. This is the same exact processor that is so popular in netbooks like the Wind U100.

Other features of the NAS include 1GB of RAM and a disk on module architecture. The NAS device supports four 2.5-inch SATA hard drives and power consumption with four hard drives installed is as low as 18W. The device also has three USB ports and a pair of eSATA ports for adding external storage drives and integrated iSCSI target service for supporting up to eight iSCSI devices.
