As reported last week, the new iPhone 2009 is most likely keeping the current iPhone 3G design and is just increasing performance in the CPU, RAM, Camera and possibly 3G performance (HSDPA) areas. It is pretty much sure at this point that the new iPhone will have a compass and a 32GB storage option.
Last week a widely linked new iPhone rumor from AppleiPhoneApps.com suggested there would be an OLED screen for the new iPhone. If the rumor is true, the OLED screen could be the central highlight of the new iPhone.
OLED screens are brighter, lighter, offer a wider view angle and use much less power than LCD screens. OLED screens are the ideal choice for mobile phones and OLED phones are starting to become more common. Reuters reported last week that Samsung Mobile Display's AM-OLED screen production is likely to quadruple this year from 2008.
The performance improvements rumored for the new iPhone are nice, but a new bright and crisp screen could make a big splash, especially if it also improves battery life of the iPhone.
It would be time for Apple to adopt OLED. The rumors around Apple and OLED displays has been roaming the interwebs since at least early 2008.
