At EA3, Electronic Arts' pre-E3 mini-expo, we got some chilling new details about the sequel to one of the scariest games of all time. Dead Space: Extraction, the sequel to 2008's Dead Space, is set to come out in Fall of 2009, and it's already looking like a worthy successor to its legendary progenitor.

IGN's report on EA3's Dead Space preview tells us a few things. First, that the Wii-based "sequel" will actually be a prequel to the first game. In Extraction, you will play one of the miners from the planet that the Ishimura (the ship you fought on in the original) was orbiting. You'll have to escape your virus-ridden home to the relative safety of the Ishimura.

Of course, it won't be easy. As everyone who played Dead Space knows, the Ishimura has some problems of its own. Other mining refugees already beat you there, and they've infected your mothership with some horrible, virulent disease. The crew of the Ishimura is paranoid, and they'd rather shoot you down than take the chance that you're infected as well. Before you can even get aboard, you'll have to fight your way to the Ishimura itself.

Extraction will bring several new features to the Dead Space franchise. For one thing, your weapons (and yes, there will be new weapons) all have secondary modes now. There will also be a bunch of Wii-mote based puzzles for you to think your way through, and a bunch of new levels of the Ishimura to explore.

Nintendo doesn't exactly have a reputation for being a horror-gaming powerhouse, but Extraction looks like it has a fair shot to be the scariest game of 2009. I was iffy about a Dead Space sequel on the Wii, but the more I see of it the more excited I get. Come E3, we should be getting a new trailer, plus a whole bunch of new gameplay info.
