Today is a great day for Verizon customers, and a terrible day for Sprint. Information has just come down the pipeline that Verizon Wireless will be getting the Palm Pre, the Storm 2, and several undisclosed Android devices within the next six months. Update Sprint says that Palm Pre exclusivity is through 2009. Via BGR. If you've been ogling a Palm Pre but don't quite trust Sprint, you only have a few more months to wait before you get the phone of your dreams.
The Storm 2 has been a known Verizon arrival for awhile now, but the Palm Pre and the upcoming Android devices are a shot out of left field. There's no news yet as to what Android smartphones we can look forward to, but we should hear some specifics over the next couple of weeks.
What's most surprising to me is the Pre. The fact that Palm is expanding over to Verizon is basically a tacit admission of the fact that Sprint is circling the drain. The Pre was their big hope for a revival, and the announcement that it's coming to Verizon has already lead to a drop in their stock. If enough customers get worried about Sprint's viability, they could end up losing a lot of their anticipated Pre sales.
Palm probably would've been best served by letting this information out after the Pre's release in June. Less Sprint Pre customers means less people buying the Pre off the bat, which isn't going to be good for Palm either. An anemic opening weekend for the new smartphone could end up hurting it a lot in the long run.
