Qualcomm has announced the development of a new chip based on its Snapdragon platform called the Snapdragon QSD8650A chipset. The chipset is designed to be used in smartphones and smartbooks. Sampling of the chipset is to begin before the end of 2009 according to Qualcomm.

The chipset includes a 1.3GHz processor that promises 30% higher performance and enhanced 2D/3D graphics. The chipset offers performance without sacrificing power consumption and needs fewer than 10 milliwatts of power in standby mode.

Power consumption in standby mode is very important for a smartphone and correlates directly with how long the battery will last in the device. Other features of the chipset include multi-mode UMTS and CDMA 3G in the same 15x15mm package size the current Snapdragon chipsets use. The chip also integrates Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, and support for WXGA displays.
