We all know Google's open source Android operating system as a smartphone OS. However, Google has its eyes on more uses for Android than smartphones alone. Acer has announced that it will be selling netbooks running Android in Q3 of 2009.
Some analysts think that Android could threaten Microsoft's dominance in the netbook market. Acer will be the first firm to launch Android netbooks. Considering the very small percentage of netbooks sold with Linux, which Android is based on, and the abnormally high return rate for Linux notebooks I don’t think Microsoft has much to worry about.
Acer also plans to enter the smartphone market and Android is a sure to show up in those devices as well. Acer says that it will continue to offer XP on its netbooks alongside Android. Acer currently has the most popular line of netbooks in the world.
