Garmin has issued a voluntary recall on the data cards sold with two of its marine GPS units called the BlueChart g2 and the g2 Vision. Boaters use these charts to tell how deep water is and plot a course. Obviously bad chart data can lead to all sorts of issues from running aground to outright capsizing.

Garmin says that it is issuing a voluntary recall of the 2009 version data cards for the two affected units after it became aware that the charting information specifically around Demark and Sweden showed inaccurate colors for water depths. At least two boaters have run aground because of faulty information on the charts.

Garmin points out that while these are the only location it is aware of issues with, it can’t be sure that the mapping data in other parts of the world is correct. Owners of the affected data cards are told to discontinue the use of the charts immediately and a free 2008.5 data card will be given to them along with a new 2009 card when available.
