An interesting New York Times interview with Asustek vice chairman Jonathan Tsang has given us a look at what the future for Asus could hold. The Taiwanese PC maker has been one of the primary movers of the emergence of the netbook market, and now it looks like they want to bring their innovations out to the wider tech world.
"Our goal is to provide products that are better than Apple's." said Tsang.
Beating Apple at their own game seems a little far-fetched for Asus, but you can't blame them for trying. In addition to staying ahead of the netbook curve, Asus is working to get into the smartphone racket by teaming up with the folks at Garmin. They've also developed both a Wii-like motion control gaming system and an e-reader, although neither are expected to be released anytime soon.
"We don't have the chicken, so cannot have the egg." was Tsang's explanation for why neither device has seen the light of day. Getting content is an issue, if you aren't Nintendo or Amazon.
Asus is definitely going to be one of the companies to watch over the next couple of years. They're expanding their product lines across the board, and they've got a history of innovation in the industry. I don't know if they'll ever be bigger than Apple, but we can't lose if they try.
