Okay, so maybe we spoke too soon. Back before the 3GS was released a picture of a matte black iPhone case got leaked out to the world. After the unveiling of the new iPhone on Monday, we all just assumed the leaked photos had been a hoax of some sort.

Apparently we were wrong. The FCC released a list of ID numbers for new cell phones. The iPhone 3GS was on there, and its model number and ID matched with the numbers on leaked backside image. It now appears that the leaked photos were real pictures of an iPhone 3GS, although obviously not of the version we saw on Monday.

There are a few possible reasons for this. One is that the leaked matte black case was from an earlier prototype of the 3GS that was discarded. Another possibility is that the leaked photos are from an upcoming version of the 3GS that has yet to be released. It could be a while before the truth gets out, but we'll keep trawling for answers until we find out just what those leaked pictures were of.
