One of the most anticipated features of the new iPhone OS 3.0 is the TomTom for iPhone GPS system, which finally offers turn-by-turn navigation to iPhone owners. The new TomTom iPhone app will launch next week with the iPhone 3GS and OS 3.0. TomTom will be offering both a software app, and a physical 'car kit' for users.
This car kit will contain an iPhone dock that will charge your phone while offering “enhanced GPS performance” and hands-free calling/GPS usage. TomTom brags that their GPS program will benefit from continuous updates while being fed info from a wide variety of maps. Basically, with the TomTom app your iPhone will now have the same functionality of a Garmin.
Once again we see technology consolidate itself into a smaller, all inclusive package. The more smartphones become able to handle things like turn-by-turn GPS directions the less use people will have for pure-GPS devices. There is a reason that Garmin has teamed up with Asus to create a smartphone/GPS gadget.
Anyway, if you're jumping at the bit to see just what TomTom's new program is going to look like you can check out this video of the new app in action. Apple fans have a lot to look forward to next week!
