Olympus announces a wireless digital camera pill that can be swallowed by patients.
Olympus started clinical trials at medical institutions in the USA, Europe and Japan. Commercial launch of the camera pill should be in 2006. The high-tech pill replaces conventional endoscopes that require a tube to be inserted.
The Olympus wireless camera pill measures 26 x 11mm and is disposable. While traveling through the digestive tract the pill makes 2 shots per second. The images are sent wirelessly to a video monitor.
More details in Olympus press-release (Japanese) and on Nikkei.NET (Subscription).
We reported in May about Given Imaging introducing a similar wireless digital camera pill.
