Apple Nixes Nvidia?

Remember back when a bunch of Nvidia chips failed in MacBooks due to a really simple packaging error? Well apparently that was the straw that broke the back of the relationship between Apple and Nvidia. Dubiously named website Semi-Accurate is reporting that there has been a serious falling out between the gadget maker and the chip designer. The next generation of MacBooks and iMacs will not contain Nvidia chips.
Apparently the split was not a particularly pleasant one. The report states that fairly harsh words were used. Apple's primary issue with Nvidia was due to their quality control issues, which have been rather extensive in the past. Apple apparently told Nvidia to wait '3-4' years before trying to win their business again.
I don't see how this can be anything but a good thing from a consumer standpoint. Bad chips should not be tolerated from a hardware manufacturer. Apple paid the bill for their poor quality control and to risk another batch of shoddy products would be utterly irresponsible to their shareholders and their consumers. There is a reason Apple is as successful as they are; they know how to do business. Next useless appendage to slice off; AT&T.
Update: This is Luigi adding his 5 cents to this story: I doubt Apple and NVIDIA will split. Apple has already invested not only in the hardware side of things, but also into the promises of CUDA. No NVIDIA no CUDA. The upcoming Snow Leopard will be supporting CUDA, as Windows 7 will do as well.Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2009 01:30:00 CDT | by Robert Evans
