Pitch Media, who track iPhone and iPod app usage, have noticed an increasing number of iPod Touch 3,1s in use. They noticed the first 3,1s kicking around at the end of April of this year. There were very few of them at first and their app usage was sporadic at best. Things started to pick up around late May, and as of right now 'a few dozen' 3,1s have been sighted using two dozen different apps.
All of the applications used by the 3,1s in testing were among the largest and most widely used apps. The testers specifically picked apps with hundreds of thousands to millions of unique users. Other than high volume, none of the apps had anything in common, which makes it pretty obvious that Apple was stress-testing their new iPod with the apps they knew would be downloaded and used most often once the 3,1 launches.
Unfortunately this doesn't give us any new information about what sort of camera we can look forward to on the new Touch. What it does do is give us a rough timeframe for the launch of the 3,1. The iPhone 3GS was first sighted by Pitch Media back in January, and it launched in June. Things won't be exactly the same for Touch, but if we assume they'll be similar we can expect a launch in late September or early October.
That's not anything to bet the farm on, of course, but it'll do until we get a solid release leak or a statement from Apple.
