It's been a tough couple of quarters for RIM, but things are finally starting to look up. The Tour is doing well, Google Voice just released an app for their app store, MyBlackBerry is live, and now we can confirm that tabbed browsing is indeed coming to BlackBerries. RIM has been working on this feature since 2007, and it looks like everything will finally be ready come the release of OS 5.0.
According to Boy Genius the process of opening up new tabs is fairly intuitive, but switching between them can be a major pain. There's no keyboard shortcut to take you to all of your tabbed windows, an oversight RIM will hopefully fix before release. If the iPhone has taught us anything it's that the speediest, easiest browser is the best. Hopefully RIM really has learned a thing or two from Apple.
Most of RIM's recent losses have been due to the issues they've had adapting to the next generation of smartphones. They've let their OS go stale and given very little thought at all so far to their app store. That's why Apple has been eating them alive this quarter.
Thankfully, RIM was smart enough learn fast from their mistakes. OS 5.0 is shaping up to be a huge step forward for the company, and their best-selling line of smatphones. Tabbed browsing alone isn't going to stem the tide of RIM's losses, but combined with a swath of other improvements and the launch of the MyBlackBerry community, they at least have a fighting chance to stand up to Apple.
