It's finally happened. Google Android developer Jean-Baptiste Quero has done a code drop to the Android Open Source Project. The update still isn't ready to release, but if you really want to, you can download the ROM here.

Among the more surprising findings within Donut is the fact that it comes with CDMA support. This means that Android is definitely coming to Sprint this year, and it also makes it likely we'll see a Verizon Android phone hit soon.

Donut itself brings a laundry list of beautiful new features to all Android phones. Gesture controls and the system wide search option are the big ones, but that's far from all. VPN support, an updated camera and UI, a compatibility mode, credential storage, a speech synthesizer, power control, and new text widgets have all been added. In addition, there are some claims that Donut substantially improves the performance of the G1 smartphone.

We'll all get a chance to see Donut for ourselves soon enough. A code drop means we're only a short hop, skip, and jump away from the full release. Soon we can stop waiting for Donut and start waiting for Flan.
