Verizon: Palm Pre in 2010

This morning, VZW continues their march towards smartphone dominance. They announced their Q2 revenue today (up by 11.3%) along with their added subscribers (1.1 million) for the quarter. It's been a good three months for Verizon and the future looks just as bright. They're already rumored to be pushing their 4G network out in 2010, to coincide with the launch of Apple's tablet.
That's not the only good news for Verizon, either. Today in a conference call with analysts VZW stated that the Palm Pre would be coming to their network “early next year”. There have been rumors about a Verizon Pre for a while now, but this is the first time we've gotten actual confirmation from the company.
Of course, by the time the Pre hits Verizon it'll be solidly a member of the 'last' generation of smartphones. Rumors of the Pre's successor will already be clogging the tech sites, and a bevy of new Android devices will distract users from last year's hot smartphone. Still, the fact that the Pre is coming to Verizon makes it likely that whatever sequels Palm has planned will be out there as well.
The only company this is bad news for is Sprint. Compared to the famous AT&T/Apple exclusivity agreement, their contract with Palm was very short. I think it's likely that Palm learned from Apple here. They saw their competitor's successful smartphone being held back by the carrier, and decided they wanted to minimize the amount of time they'd be beholden to Sprint to as little as possible. From where I'm standing, it seems to have worked pretty well.
