Samsung has announced a new line of HDDs for servers and desktop PCs that have 500GB of storage per platter. The drives are aimed at high-end computing environments and are called the Spinpoint F3. The drive spins at 7200rpm.
The first F3 drive will be a 1TB drive needing only two platters to reach that capacity. In addition to high capacity the drives also have high-performance and low power consumption.
Samsung says that the drives are 30% higher-performance than three platter 1TB drives in the same 3.5-inch form factor. The reduction in parts also means that the drive is more reliable with better shock tolerance and less likelihood of data failure. The drive can be had in 500GB now and a 1TB version will ship in August.
