Google has decided that they aren't going to take the App Store's refusal of Google Voice lying down. According to the New York Times (via AppleInsider) Google is working on a browser-based Voice app built specifically with the iPhone in mind. As a Google spokesperson told AppleInsider last week.
"Apple did not approve the Google Voice application we submitted six weeks ago to the Apple App Store. We will continue to work to bring our services to iPhone users, for example by taking advantage of advances in mobile browsers."
Google is making good on that promise by putting out a full-featured web app version of Voice. It will function exactly the same as the app would have, and users will even be able to install it as an icon on their home screen. Apple has yet to respond to this new development, but I think it's likely that Google is going to get the last laugh here.
The only way Apple can stop this browser app is by blocking the webpage on all iPhones. This would be an extremely dangerous precedent to set. Users pay for access to the whole Internet, not Apple's filtered version of it. If Cupertino decides to fight back on this issue, they will lose. If not in a court of law, than in the court of public opinion. It's time for Apple to bow down, admit defeat, and accept Google Voice as an inevitability.
