The Apple OS X Snow Leopard Update has been available for pre-order since early August. We still do not know when Apple is actually shipping Snow Leopard. Over the weekend photos of the alleged Snow Leopard retail packaging appeared on MacRumors.

The photos show a Snow Leopard box from Portugal. The tag line reads: "The world's most advanced operating system. Perfectly optimized."
The shots look pretty real. This would mean Apple is already in full production of Snow Leopard. They better be if the promised September launch time frame is to hold up. Some rumors even point to a Snow Leopard launch end of August.
