MIDs aren't generally very exciting devices. Considering most of them cost in excess of $1000 for less functionality than the average netbook, they haven't really made much of a splash on the gadget market yet. That said, this new mystery Android MID pictured by pocketables has me drooling like a pubescent ninny.

These leaked MID images don't show a model name or give any information about the manufacturer. All we know is that someone is working on an exquisitely thin, elegantly simplistic little tablet MID powered by Android. It has at least one SD card slot and possible phone functions. If you look at the top of that menu in the picture, you can just barely read the words, “SD card & phone storage”. That could mean that this svelte beauty has a SIM slot somewhere in that tiny frame.

Pocketables estimates its size as about 4.5” by 3”, with pretty much all of that space being touchscreen. We know absolutely nothing else about this gorgeous little machine, but I can already tell you that I really, really want one. An ultra-thin Android MID that doubles as a smartphone would be a wonderful alternative device for those of us who want a tablet, but don't find the CrunchPad or the (possible) iTablet attractive.

How well this thing is going to do will depend on a couple of factors. For one thing, it's going to need to be cheap. Considering the cost of the CrunchPad and the expected cost of the iTablet, I'd say somewhere between $300-700 would be ideal. A front-facing camera for video-conferencing would go a long way towards making this pad a truly viable piece of gear. Unfortunately, we probably won't know more about this mystery MID for a few weeks.
