Well Android users, a bunch of you may have been screwed over by the rapidly approaching obsolescence of the G1, but at least now you have the coolest app in the world to make the pain go away. Layar, the world's first augmented reality app developer, has just released version 2.0 of their mobile AR app. This version of Layar is the first one available for Android smartphone owners the world over. If you run the OS, you can now download Layar.
In addition to widening the user-base, Layar 2.0 has a whole host of awesome new features. This new version has Layars from more than 100 different developers, and another 500 have API keys and are in the process of building more. They're moving for universal use with this app, and all local Android Markets will host it. The Samsung i7500 in the Netherlands will even launch with it pre-loaded.
This update to Layar gives two new functions to the Reality Browser, 'Featured' and 'Popular'. You'll be able to find all layars with a keyword search as well. Frequently used layars can be saved as favorites, and multiple different actions are now available for each individual Point of Interest (POI). With one click you'll be able to find the name and phone number of that bar down the street, and either call it or visit the website with one click of a button.
If you have an Android smartphone, you've got to try this application. AR is the future of bar-hopping, job searching, and apartment hunting. Take it out for a spin this weekend and see for yourself how much more convenient life is when you can see in shades of Internet.
