Good news, Android fans! TomTom, the famed voice navigation system that has become so popular on the iPhone, will soon be coming to the Android OS. What's more, according to Android and Me it looks like we'll get TomTom before it comes to the BlackBerry OS. This is based on a Pocket-Lint interview with Benoit Simeray, senior VP at TomTom.
“We cannot ignore such a successful platform as Android. HTC is an important partner of ours and Android is becoming increasingly important too.” said Simeray.
TomTom's newfound appreciation for Android appears to arise from the growing tightness of their relationship with Google. TeleAtlas, which TomTom acquired back in '07, had a 5 year agreement to provide Google Maps with data. This could herald a greater level of cooperation between TomTom and Google, and the addition of Google Map updates and new information to TomTom's map library.
Simeray was asked about BlackBerry support in the interview, and he insinuated that it was not on the immediate horizon due to the fact that most RIM devices lack a large touchscreen. TomTom considers touchscreens, and voice command capability, crucial when developing their application for new handsets. This could mean that Android will be the next OS to get a TomTom application, even before the much more popular BlackBerry.
