The US DOJ has announced that Epson has agreed to plead guilty and pay a fine of $26 million over its part in an LCD price fixing scheme. The TFT panels were built by Epson and sold to Motorola. Epson sold the LCD panels to Motorola for use in its Razr mobile phones form the fall of 2005 to the middle of 2006.
Epson is charged with carrying to the conspiracy by agreeing during meetings, conversations, and communications with unnamed co-conspirators to charge prices of the TFT-LCDs sold to Motorola at predetermined levels.
Epson issued its prices in accordance with these agreements. Other major manufacturers have also pled guilty and been fined, with some executives getting jail time. Among the other firms involved in the conspiracy are LG, Sharp, Hitachi, and Chunghwa.
