Over the last couple of weeks, the whole gadget world has been nerding out over a mysterious Android MID. This little 5” device is a shiny, unbelievably slim little beauty of a touch tablet that's set geek hearts across the Internet aflame. Unfortunately, the identity of this Cinderella-tablet has remained utterly unknown since it's first appearance two weeks ago.

Unknown until now, that is. Pocketables has managed to tie a name to this sultry little minx of an MID. Apparently this tablet is a concept prototype from Chinese manufacturer Rockchip, built to show off their RK2808 720p-decoding chipset. This is both bad news and good news. The bad news is that we may never see this product in stores, the good news is that we're very likely to see something that's virtually identical. Possibly even better.

In the videos this baby looks like anything but a prototype. The touchscreen is very responsive, and the Android OS looks as good as I've ever seen it. It browses quickly and switches between windows with apparent ease. The size also looks just perfect. You could comfortably carry this thing in a pair of cargo pants, or in a normal pocket if you didn't mind overburdening your pockets a bit. If this thing has a SIM slot and Bluetooth capability, it would make an awesome replacement for a smartphone.

We still don't have the faintest idea when this MID (or something like it) will make its way into stores. Rockchip has created a fair amount of buzz with this little tablet of theirs, though. With any luck they'll decide to ride that hype train into an early 2010 launch. Hey, a man can dream, can't he?
