Streaming music on cell phones is one of those beautiful dreams that wouldn't have been possible just a few short years ago. Services like Rhapsody and Spotify couldn't really come into their own without smartphones. Streaming music on your computer is nice because it allows you to indulge those momentary whims to hear songs you'd never want to buy. But, due to the massive amount of hard drive space most of us have these days, they're limited in usefulness. Most people prefer to just download and store their music.
But smartphones don't have nearly as much space as computers. And we always have them with us. If you have a streaming music app on your smartphone you can indulge your every musical whim whenever you wish. It's a beautiful thing. There was some question initially about whether or not Apple would be keen on allowing streaming music services on their iPhone. After all, Rhapsody or Spotify could be seen as competition for iTunes, and we all know how Apple feels about competition.
Thankfully, today Apple approved the Spotify app for the iPhone. This amounts to an admission that, yes, they are going to allow music service competition within their own App Store. That's good news for customers, and great news for the folks at Real, who run the Rhapsody streaming music service.
Rhapsody just finished an iPhone app and submitted it for approval by the App Store. We've been waiting on the edge of our seats ever since, eager to see just what Apple would do with it. We still don't know for sure if Rhapsody will be approved, but the fact that Spotify was, almost guarantees it. With any luck, this means that Apple has gotten over some of their App Store craziness.
