LG 15-inch OLED Screen Coming

Ladies and gentlemen, I think I'm in love. LG has loaded up a bunch of photos of their new OLED monitor on Flickr, and Engadget has the info on its launch. This gorgeous 15" screen is probably the single most decadent piece of hardware I've seen in my life. OLED screens are droolworthy on something as tiny as a Zune HD. On a full monitor, they're mind-blowing.
These new monitors will see a full launch in December. Price has not yet been announced, but I think we can expect it to be pretty excessive. Sony's 11" OLED XEL-1 costs a hefty $2500, and I'd be surprised if this LG monitor wasn't over $3000. That said, I'll be incredibly happy if I end up being wrong about that.
It's pretty clear that OLED is the future of display technology. In five years, they'll probably be fairly common for computer monitors, mobile screens, and tablet PCs. In ten years, they could be ubiquitous (if something better and cheaper doesn't come along). These monitors are for the early adopters, people with more money than sense and an unhealthy lust for the latest and greatest gadgets. In other words, lucky rich jerks.
I'm afraid I might just be the slightest bit jealous.
Update: LG will offer their first OLED TV this November in Korea. Via Reuters.Posted on Sat, 29 Aug 2009 12:00:00 CDT | by Robert Evans
