Samsung has unveiled its latest hard drive offering. The drive is the 2.5-inch 640GB SpinPoint M7. The drive is designed to be used inside of notebook computers and other devices with room for a 2.5-inch HDD.
The new HDD uses platters with 320GB of storage each offering 516-gigaibt per square inch of data. That is a 28% increase in density per platter compared to Samsung's previous 500GB HDD. The drive is also designed to survive bumps and shocks with the ability to withstand 400G while operating and 900G when power is off.
The drive is also optimized for quiet operation and power efficiency. The drive is halogen free making it RoHS compliant for sale in Europe. Other drives in the M7 series are offered in 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, 500GB, and the new 640GB capacity. The entire line spins at 5400 rpm and uses the 3Gbps SATA interface. The 640GB drive will ship in late September for $149.99.
